Irun

Situated on the French-Spanish border, Irun and the neighbouring Hondarribia are popular destinations for holidaymakers wanting a traditional Basque experience.

Although Irún appears fairly new, there are many buildings which give an idea of the history of the area. These include the church of Santa María del Juncal, dating back to the 16th century, with both Baroque and Romanesque influences. Another Baroque-inspired building is the impressive City Hall, across from the statue of Saint John of Harri, which is a striking reminder of the city’s independence.

As is the case in this part of Spain, outdoor activities are very popular, ranging from golf and horse trekking for those wanting a more relaxed experience, to -for those with more of an appetite for adrenaline- hang-gliding and canoeing.
