What’s on in Bilbao

Best known for the Guggenheim museum there are several events throughout the year of interest to local and tourists alike. The BBK Live Festival happens every year around the second weekend of July with the final night occurring on Saturday. This year it is unfortunately postponed but will return in 2021 with acts such as The Killers and Pet Shop Boys. Like other Basque towns, the biggest event of the year is undoubtedly the Semana Grande. From August the 22nd until August the 30th you will find people partying in the streets at all hours and fireworks every evening around 22:30. More traditional festivities such as Basque dancing, bullfighting and traditional music can also be seen and heard across the city during this time.

Bilbao is the capital of culture and largest city in Pais Vasco. Like its smaller neighbour, San Sebastian, it prides itself on good quality food at all price ranges and almost every bar will serve pintxos style tapas.

The Guggenheim Museum opened in 1997 and since then has become the most popular tourist attraction in the city drawing visitors from all around the globe. We recommend a visit to the Bistro cafe after your visit and enjoy a drink on the terrace.

As well as the museum the city’s old town (Casco Viejo) is popular for its bars and restaurants and quaint medieval streets. You will also find several churches and the Ribera Market.

If you are coming to enjoy the pleasant year-round temperatures there aren’t many beaches nearby. Plentzia is popular as it is at the end of the Metro line; although for surfers, Bakio is the better choice.
